Of Muck and Flowers

“Every flower must grow through dirt.”  ~ Laurie Jean Senott

As a long-time spiritual seeker, psychotherapist, therapy client, and gardener, I have grown through a lot of ”dirt”. You know, the stuff of muck and flowers!

The Proximity of Human-ness and Spirit

Earlier in my life, I believed the goal of spiritual practice was to shepherd me to a place of perfection and piety, a choice-less state of existence free from conflict, an experience out-of and away-from the body.  In my innocence, I thought spiritual maturity would bring me to a destination of detachment from the slings and arrows of life, and from the intense contrast we experience in human existence.

With deeper understanding, the opposite has made itself clear to me!

It is not around, or away-from, or in spite of, the body and its human experiences that I find grace, freedom, and even equanimity - but rather through the experience of physicality, in the very midst of our world … and, because of it.

Diving Deep and Soaring

In this life, my soul is nurtured and nourished within the messiness of life.  The life of the lotus flower opens a doorway to understanding this.  Without muck, stagnation, and conditions that seem fairly inhospitable, the lotus exists not!

It is in the living the 'full catastrophe’ that my heart sings and my soul soars.

I invite you to join me in meditating upon the lotus flower, giving thanks for the gifts of muck and flowers in our lives.
